• Contact times are short (in terms of RTTs)

  • Possibly one-way
  • Sometimes with long intervals (days, weeks) between

• Data is precious and buffers are finite

• Transaction sizes will be small compared to the bandwidth-delay product of the pipe

• Power, weight, and volumes are the (metric) units of currency
