Delay-Tolerant
Network Architecture: The Evolving Interplanetary Internet
(Text - 157K)
This Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) document describes an
architecture for delay-tolerant networks, and is a generalization
of the architecture designed for the Interplanetary Internet: a
communication system to provide Internet-like services across interplanetary
distances in support of deep space exploration. This generalization
addresses networks whose operational characteristics make conventional
networking approaches become either unworkable or impractical. We
define a message-based overlay that exists above the transport layer
of the networks on which it is hosted. The draft presents an architectural
overview followed by discussions of services, topology, routing,
security, reliability and state management. It concludes with a
discussion of end-to-end information exchange, including an example.

DTN
Tutorial (Adobe PDF - 632K)
This excellent tutorial in "Delay Tolerant Networking"
(the new technical discipline that includes the InterPlaNetary Internet)
was contributed by Forrest Warthman of Warthman Associates, http://www.warthman.com.
We thank Forrest for an outstanding piece of independent and very
useful work.
The
Interplanetary Internet: Architecture and Key Technical Concepts
Presented at the 11th Annual Internet Society Conference
INET 2001
-- The Internet Global Summit, a Net Odyssey: Mobility and the Internet
(5-8 June 2001)
If you wish to download
the entire PowerPoint presentation, please note that it is VERY
LARGE (28.1Mb). In addition, a movie (AVI) is intended to be viewed
on Slide 16, In-situ Networking. If you wish to view this movie
during the PowerPoint presentation, you will need to download a
ZIP file and extract it into the same directory as the PowerPoint
file before viewing. Note that this file is also VERY LARGE (5.28Mb).
Alternately, you may view the movie on its own.
